Medical issues do not always happen during typical office hours. At Country Village Pet Care Hospital, we feel that providing personal and convenient care is important in the continuity of care.  Your pet is important to us and we will do our best to fulfill emergency needs personally.  After hours, Dr. Will can be reached at home or on his cellular phone.  The emergency home and cell numbers are for use of current clients only. Once the DVM on call is contacted, an emergency visit can be arranged at our Alden office.  All patients are triaged and examined based on medical urgency. In addition, The Blue Pearl Veterinary Emergency Service and Orchard Park Veterinary Medical Center are always available when our office is closed.

We define an emergency two ways:

  1. An emergency is present when the life of a patient is at risk.
  2. Also, an emergency is present when a client feels the situation is an emergency.

Normal emergency fees apply to all services provided at Country Village Pet Care Hospital, The Blue Pearl Veterinary Emergency Clinic and Orchard Park Veterinary Medical Center.

Diagnostic Testing

Blood testing can be performed in house with use of our IDEXX Catalyst and LaserCyte machines.  During emergency situations, blood work is able to be completed within 15 minutes.  We also utilize our machines prior to or the day of your pet’s surgery or for wellness blood profiles.  Blood testing establishes healthy baseline values, identifies unseen disease, determines safety of drugs, evaluates your pet’s abilities to remove by-products of medications, and provide surgical and everyday peace of mind.

Testing includes:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC)
    • Red Blood Cells
    • White Blood Cells
    • Platelet/Clotting tests
  • Pancreatitis
  • Other Blood tests as indicated by your pet’s health status.
  • Kidney Function Tests
  • Liver Function Tests
  • Diabetes Screen
  • Total Protein
  • T4 thyroid function

At Country Village Pet Care Hospital, we want to provide only the most complete testing possible for your pet when it comes to Heartworm and Tick diseases.  This is why we only offer a 4DX Heartworm/Tick test from IDEXX Diagnostics.  This test detects heartworm antigen and the infectious agents responsible for Lyme disease, Anaplasmosis, and Ehrlichiosis in dogs. Test results are available within 24-hours, and combines improved sensitivity and more informative Lyme testing for canine vector borne disease screening.

Radiology

Radiographs are an important part of veterinary medicine that we utilize to assist in the diagnosis of many medical problems.  our office provides on-site digital x-rays that are instantly achieved and evaluated on at that time.
Radiographs help to diagnose many problems such as:

  • Soft tissues abnormalities that include the heart, liver, lungs and kidneys and more.
  • Orthopedic issues:
    • Ruptured cruciate ligament
    • Fractures
    • Hip Displasia
    • Arthritis
    • Bone Abnormalities
    • And more
  • Foreign Bodies
  • Bladdar and kidney stones
  • Cancer Screening

Our team is trained in positioning your pet correctly so there are less radiographs taken at one time, reducing their exposure to x-ray radiation.
Most x-rays can be taken without sedation.  When sedation is needed, Dr. Will uses only the safest anesthesia available, Sevoflurane gas anesthesia.

Urinalysis and ERD Microalbuminuria Tests

Annual Microalbuminuria (ERD-Early Renal Detection) tests are run on all patients over the age of 8.  Although albumin is an important protein that is found in blood, it is not normally present in the urine of healthy pets. Microalbuminuria refers to the presence of small amounts of albumin in urine.  If our test is detecting small amounts of albumin in the urine it may indicate underlying health problems, and may be an early warning signal of renal (or kidney) damage or disease and can help slow or reverse the early onset of renal disease.

Urinalysis tests are used to detect such problems as urinary tract infections (UTI’s), bladdar stones, diabetes and kidney disease.

Feline Infectious Disease Testing

Feline Leukemia and Feline Aids:

Feline Leukemia is caused by a viral infection in cats that turns to cancer of the white blood cells.  It will impair the cat’s immune system similar to the way Feline Aids does.  Cat’s in turn lose the ability to fight off illnesses and succumb to the secondary infections.  It is spread from cat to cat by direct contact usually through saliva, urine, and feces.  Licking, biting and sneezing are the most common forms of transmission.  A healthy cat can contract the disease through water and food dishes, and litterboxes.

Feline Aids (or FIV) is a potentially fatal disease that interferes with the immune system.  It is spread cat to cat through saliva in bite wounds or from mother to kitten.

Cats may show no signs or have symptoms such as:

  • Fever
  • Anorexia
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Weight loss
  • Sores in mouth
  • Eye lesions
  • Chronic infections/inability to fight off infections

Feline Bartonella:

Bartonella, also known as Cat Scratch Disease, is a treatable disease that is transmitted to cats and kittens by fleas.

Healthy cats can carry the Bartonella bacteria in their blood, which are transmitted between cats by fleas and ticks.

Symptoms of Bartonella infected cats can include but are not limited to:

  • No symptoms
  • Gingivitis, Oral Ulcers
  • Upper Respiratory Infection
  • Conjunctivitis, Corneal Ulcers
  • Vomiting, Diarrhea
  • Fever of Unknown Origin
  • Skin Disease
  • Heart Disease
  • And More!!

Surgery Admission

No surgical procedure is routine and every patient is unique.  Therefore, the morning of your pet’s procedure prior to anesthesia, we will review the history of your pet’s health and perform a complete physical examination and necessary blood work, providing a complete physiological picture of your pet’s current health status.  A complete physical exam will evaluate your pet’s major body systems including eyes, ears, mouth, heart, lungs, abdomen, lymph nodes, joints and skin.  Dr. Will will discuss any abnormalities found on physical exam, the surgical procedure, and anesthesia with you.  He will also answer any questions you may have.

Once admitted, our veterinary team will place an IV catheter and start intravenous fluid therapy.  An IV provides direct access to the body for drug administration.  Fluid support is important for every patient before, during and after any surgical procedure.  Fluids normalize hydration status, promote kidney blood flow, and support normal blood pressure.

Pre-Surgical Blood Testing

Pre-surgical blood testing can be performed prior to or the day of your pet’s surgery.  Blood testing establishes healthy baseline values, identifies unseen disease, determines safety of drugs, evaluates your pet’s abilities to remove by-products of medications, and provide surgical peace of mind.

Testing will include:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC)

                 Red Blood Cells
                 White Blood Cells
                 Platelet/Clotting tests

  • Kidney Function Tests
  • Liver Function Tests
  • Diabetes Screen
  • Total Protein
  • Other Blood tests as indicated by your pet’s health status.

Anesthesia

Sevoflurane is the safest gas anesthetic approved in veterinary medicine.  It allows for gentle anesthetic induction and very fast recoveries.  Sevoflurane enters and exits the body quicker than any other gas anesthetic.  This allows for fast adjustments of anesthetic depth during surgery (less than 2 minutes) and recovery times of 1 to 3 minutes from surgical table to kennel/bed.

The use of pre-anesthetics allow us to smoothly and quickly achieve anesthesia.  An endotracheal tube is placed into the windpipe and oxygen and Sevoflurane administration is then continued.  A drug is administered to support heart rate.

  • Arthritis
  • Tendonitis
  • Wounds
  • Post-surgical swelling
  • Inflamed ears
  • Lick Granuloma
  • Hip Displasia
  • Disc disease
  • Lameness
  • Sinitis
  • And much more!
  • Anti-inflammatory effect
  • Analgesic effect
  • Accelerated tissue repair and cell growth
  • Improved vascular flow
  • Increases metabolic activity
  • Stimulation of trigger points and acupuncture points
  • Reduced fibrous tissue formation for healing
  • Improved nerve function
  • Immunoregulation
  • Faster wound healing

The need for surgery can be a concern for many pet owners.  Being equipped with a CO2 Surgical Laser, Dr. Will and his health care team can help to put your mind at ease about your pet’s surgical procedure, anesthesia, and recovery.

Anesthesia

At Country Village Pet Care Hospital, we use only the safest anesthesia available in Veterinary Medicine.  Sevoflorane Gas anesthesia is not injectable.  It allows us to change the depth of anesthesia to keep your pet safe.  Your pet will be under anesthesia quickly and sitting up after discontinuation of anesthesia within 5 minutes.

Anesthetic Monitoring

is a crucial part to your pet’s safety during any anesthetic procedure.  Our Licensed Veterinary Technicians are trained with use of the latest in anesthetic monitoring equipment.  Blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation levels can all be monitored during your pets surgery.

Laser Surgery

has been widely accepted as a higher standard of care in human medicine for over 30 years.  It presents a host of benefits over traditional surgery and in our procedures, we have replaced the use of the scalpel blade entirely.  We have served Buffalo, Genesee County, and Rochester clients with the best for their pet’s surgeries

The Benefits of Laser Surgery:

  • Faster Return to Normal Activities: Healing is rapid and there is less post-operative discomfort and a better course of healing.
  • Less Pain: The laser seals nerve endings as it cuts, therefore, your pet will experience less pain and be more comfortable during and after surgery.
  • Less Bleeding: Lasers seal small blood vessels during surgery.  Therefore, surgery can be completed faster, which reduces the amount of time your pet is under general anesthesia.

Reduced Swelling and Infection: Unlike the scalpel blade, there is never physical contact between the laser and the surgical site.  This eliminates the crushing, tearing, and bruising of tissue associated with traditional surgical methods.  The CO2 Laser energy acts as an antimicrobial/antibacterial agent by producing high temperatures which effectively eliminates microorganisms.

Dental Services

A professional dental cleaning is an important procedure that maintains the quality of life and health of your pet.  Bacteria associated with dental calculus causes gum inflammation, loosening of teeth, tooth infections, bad breath and pain.  The spread of bacteria from the mouth into the body promotes diseases including kidney and heart infections.

Calculus removal (Scaling)

Most pets have a large amount of tartar (calculus) present on their teeth from prolonged accumulation.  During a professional dental cleaning, an ultrasonic scaler is used to remove all of the tartar.  The calculus is removed from the surface of the tooth and also from the gingival pocket underneath the gum line.  It is only then that the teeth can be examined properly.

Dental Radiographs

Dental radiographs are essential for making an accurate diagnosis.   60% of dental disease is hidden below the gum line.  Without radiographs, oral problems may be missed which could lead to discomfort of your pet for years.

Dental Exam

It is impossible to examine the teeth properly before all of the tarter is removed.  Each tooth will be examined with a dental probe to measure the depth of the gingival pocket around the tooth.  Each tooth is evaluated according to its own merit and a decision is made as to the outcome.  Our goal is to keep every tooth possible in the mouth, however, there are many reasons why a tooth may need to be extracted.  This may include periodontal disease, loss of tooth attachment, bone loss around the tooth, broken teeth, crowded teeth, retained baby teeth, or other painful tooth conditions.  We will make every effort to save marginal teeth though in some instances it may be best to have the tooth extracted.

Extractions

Extractions are performed only when there is no other option in saving the tooth.  Depending on the tooth, there may be between 1 to 3 roots and it is important to remove each root entirely.  Teeth with multiple roots will need to be cut and sectioned before the individual roots are able to be removed.  Rest assured, tooth extractions will alleviate painful conditions in your pet’s mouth and add to their quality of life.

Polishing

Once the teeth are cleaned, examined, and other dental procedures are performed, the teeth are then polished to remove any microscopic defects on the surface of the teeth.  This is accomplished with a low-speed handpiece and polishing paste.  Polishing helps prevent immediate reattachment of bacteria and calculus.

OraVet Application

OraVet Barrier Sealant is a viscous gel-type material that has been clinically proven to create an invisible barrier on the tooth, preventing plaque and tarter from attaching to the teeth.  This allows for easier home dental care and possible prolonged time between dental cleaning procedures.  OraVet is non-toxic and safe for pets of any age.

Recovery

After the dental cleaning is complete, your pet’s mouth and face are rinsed to remove any remaining debris.  In the recovery room, your pet wakes up quickly from the sevoflorane anesthesia.  If any painful conditions exist, pain medication will be given as needed.  It is our hospital policy that pain medication is given whenever patients show any symptoms of pain.  The time in recovery will vary depending on your pet’s condition and procedures performed.  We will attempt to contact you after the procedure at the number provided to us on the admission form.
